The 1619 Project of the New York Times Magazine, an in-depth study led by Nikole Hannah-Jones of the over 400-year legacy of American slavery, was awarded the 2020 International Center of Photography (ICP) Infinity Award for Online Platform and New Media.

In conjunction with the award announcement, a video by MediaStorm featuring an interview with Hannah-Jones details the development of the project and its use by educators across the country. The Pulitzer Center, The 1619 Project's education partner, has published a reading guide, a historical terms and events index, and lesson plans to bring The 1619 Project into classrooms.

In the film, Hannah-Jones explains, "The way that educators have embraced the project has been really, truly shocking, and really the most fulfilling thing to me."

The Pulitzer Center congratulates Hannah-Jones and the entire team at the New York Times Magazine on this recognition, and encourages continued engagement with this critical work.
