Ocean

A healthy ocean is vital to addressing the climate crisis. It absorbs carbon dioxide and heat, and the life within it produces half the oxygen we breathe. Billions of people around the world rely on fish in their daily diet, and the fishing industry provides employment and income. Pulitzer Center-supported ocean reporting focuses on the threats of climate change, overfishing, biodiversity loss, and pollution, as well as potential solutions.

We accept grant proposals on a rolling basis. Our Connected Coastlines grants support reporting on climate issues along U.S. coastlines, and our ocean reporting grants support global stories on ocean health, fisheries, and other underreported topics. For long-term projects, we accept yearly applications to the Ocean Reporting Network (ORN), a collaborative ecosystem of full-time journalist Fellows around the world who systematically probe the drivers of the degradation of our marine environment across a range of topics, stories, and formats.
