Screening: Leslie Tai's 'My American Surrogate'

My American Surrogate, a short documentary by Pulitzer Center grantee Leslie Tai, screens at the IFC Center in New York on July 17 and July 18, 2019, alongside three other new short documentaries. Tai and the three other filmmakers participate in a Q&A discussion after the screening.

Tai pitched her film and won a 2017 competition held by the Pulitzer Center, in collaboration with The New York Times Op-Docs and Tribeca Film Institute. Her film investigates a Chinese surrogacy agent's business in southern California where Chinese couples seek to hire American surrogates to have their babies for them. 

Tribeca Film Institute, POV Shorts, and The New York Times Op-Docs co-present these four new short documentaries "celebrating the art and urgency of short-form storytelling." The other films profile an underdog Olympian fencer, a veteran's post-combat healing, and the power of community to confront corporate interests. 

Tai is a San Francisco-based, Chinese-American documentary filmmaker. Her documentary shorts have premiered worldwide at festivals such as Tribeca Film Festival, MoMA's Documentary Fortnight, International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), and Visions du Réel.
