Photographer Greg Constantine Brings 'Nowhere People' to Webster University

During his Wednesday, March 23, 2016 visit to Webster University, Pulitzer Center grantee Greg Constantine explores the idea of statelessness and the effects it has on individuals in Nowhere People, the third and final book of his "Nowhere People" series.

Webster's Institute for Human Rights & Humanitarian Studies hosts the book talk and signing by Constantine, who also discusses his 10-year journey surrounding the project as well as the human rights consequences of statelessness. The Webster University visit is part of a multi-city North American book tour for Constantine and Nowhere People.

According to the United Nations, more than 10 million people around the world are stateless. This means they aren't recognized by their countries, and many of them do not have birth certificates, passports, or other legal documentation.

Constantine has exhibited his work around the world and received special recognition from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees for his efforts to fight the denial of legal nationality.

Nowhere People puts a human face to the issue and shows the toll the denial of citizenship can have on people and ethnic groups who are excluded from society for reasons beyond their control. The project also provides evidence that millions of people are hidden and forgotten around the globe.

Nowhere People has received praise from various publications including The Atlantic's "Spotlight," Mother Jones, NPR and the Christian Science Monitor.

Constantine has been the recipient of several awards throughout his career as a photographer, including the Photo of the Year International (POYi), NPPA Best of Photojournalism, Days Japan, the Human Rights Press Awards in Hong Kong and the Amnesty International Media Award for Photojournalism in the UK.
