A two-day conference starting on Wednesday, August 20 in Jakarta will take a close look at Islamic reasoning on issues related to health and sexuality. The program, which will feature experts from around the world, is organized by the Graduate School of UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, the Indonesian Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Religious Affairs, and Washington University in St. Louis, MO.

Pulitzer Center Senior Editor Tom Hundley, who has been working on a long-term reporting project dealing with reproductive rights in Indonesia and the Philippines, will moderate a special session on journalism: "Bridging the Gap Between Scholarship and Journalism on Health, Medicine and Religious Issues." Hundley explored the interconnectedness of religion and public health in Indonesia in his Pulitzer Center-supported project "Indonesia and the Philippines: Gender, Health and Faith"

Washington University anthropologist John Bowen will also present his work at a session titled "Islam and Health in Muslim Societies." The Pulitzer Center and Washington University are partners in one of several reporting projects funded by the Henry Luce Foundation that focuses on elevating the quality of journalism on issues at the intersection of public policy and religious belief.

The conference is open to the public.
