Join us on Wednesday, March 1, 2017, at the University of Pennsylvania for a conversation on the Middle East with former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and former National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley. Perry World House Inaugural Director Dr. William Burke-White introduces the event and Pulitzer Center Executive Director Jon Sawyer moderates.

Albright and Hadley are co-chairs of the Atlantic Council's Middle East Strategy Task Force (housed within the Rafik Hariri Center), a two-year initiative aimed at forging new policy solutions that harness the resources and human capital of the Middle East region itself as a solution to state failure, civil wars, and extremist violence. Albright served as secretary of state and ambassador to the United Nations under President William J. Clinton. Hadley served as national security advisor under President George W. Bush.

Some of their discussion will revolve around the Pulitzer Center-supported project "Fractured Lands: How the Arab World Came Apart" and the reporting of journalist Scott Anderson. The New York Times Magazine devoted its entire August 14, 2016, edition to Anderson's "Fractured Lands" article and accompanying photography by Paolo Pellegrin. A virtual reality segment on the fight for Fallujah, by Ben C. Solomon, also was part of the "Fractured Lands" project.

Albright and Hadley are speaking at a diverse set of educational institutions affiliated with the Pulitzer Center around the country. The first events occurred at Washington University in St. Louis and Nerinx Hall High School in February 2017. While in Philadelphia, Albright and Hadley also will speak with high school students from Science Leadership Academy during a session at the Franklin Institute.

The Albright-Hadley conversation at Perry World House is organized by Pulitzer Center, Atlantic Council and University of Pennsylvania via its Middle East Center, South Asia Center and Perry World House. The University of Pennsylvania is a Campus Consortium partner.
