In July 2016, Amy Maxmen traveled to Kwa-Zulu Natal in South Africa, where girls under age 20 are being infected by HIV at alarming rates. To learn why, she spent time with young women and with scientists who have struggled to create tools that protect women. The resulting stories were published in Nature, Scientific American and Vice.
