The 30-acre dump site of Dandora serves as the only repository for the trash generated by Nairobi's 3 million people. One-third of the city's population lives in the slums surrounding the dump site, and the effect on these communities is two-fold: illnesses related to the close proximity of the trash have become chronic and widespread, while at the same time people living in these areas have grown increasingly dependent on the dump for their livelihood.
