University of Iowa

The University of Iowa is one of the nation’s premier public universities, known for its balanced commitment to teaching, research, and service, its proud tradition of creativity and artistic production, and its history of leadership in diversity and inclusion.

The Iowa Campus Consortium partnership is an interdisciplinary collaboration linking the UI School of Journalism and Mass Communication with the UI College of Public Health. The initial thematic focus of the collaboration is rural health. Working with faculty from journalism and public health, as well as professional journalists from the Pulitzer Center, students develop innovative reporting projects related to this global theme, including topics such as aging, environmental justice, food security, health services delivery, maternal and child health, natural disasters, and water scarcity. The program also provides opportunities for students, faculty, and the broader community to engage with Pulitzer Center journalists during campus visits.

Established in 1924, the School of Journalism and Mass Communication has long been recognized as a national leader in journalism education. The School has produced thousands of distinguished graduates, many of which have gone on to win Pulitzer Prizes, Peabody Awards, and Emmy Awards. Aside from its longstanding interest in writing and storytelling, the School considers public engagement across campus, community, and the communication professions as one of its signal areas of focus.

The UI College of Public Health is recognized for its highly ranked educational programs, multidisciplinary research portfolio, and extensive community engagement initiatives. With an emphasis on rural public health issues, the college prepares students and society to meet new and emerging health challenges, such as novel infectious diseases, rising chronic conditions, and a changing climate, as well as long-standing concerns, such as air and water quality, cancer prevention, health care quality and services, and substance abuse.
