Ivan Kulshytskiy is a deputy Cossack leader in the Donetsk People’s Republic

Ivan Kulshytskiy is a deputy Cossack leader in the Donetsk People’s Republic. The Cossacks have long cherished self-rule and independence. Kulshytskiy says the Ukrainian government prevented him and other Ukrainian Cossacks from owning land his grandfather died fighting for. Today, the Donetsk People’s Republic allows him more freedom, and, in turn, the Cossacks pledge allegiance to the local Donetsk authorities. Image by Nick Schifrin.
