The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting will launch a promotional giveaway of two of its award-winning enhanced e-books for iPad, "In Search of Home" and "Voices of Haiti." Both books will be available for free on the Apple iBookstore during the week of June 12 to 19. Click the links to download.

The giveaway aligns with the Pulitzer Center's outreach efforts at LOOK3's 6th Annual "Festival of the Photograph." One of the largest photography education festivals in the country, "The Festival of the Photograph" will take place from June 13 to June 15 in Charlottesville, Virginia. Meghan Dhaliwal, Pulitzer Center's Multimedia Projects Coordinator, will be demonstrating the innovative features of the e-books series at the festival's BOOKstore space.

"In Search of Home" depicts the lives of stateless people in Kenya, Burma, and the Dominican Republic. It features the photography of Greg Constantine and the reporting of Stephanie Hanes. It was designed and produced by Jake Naughton using Apple's iBooks Author program. Interactive components were created by Maura Youngman.

Constantine says that e-books provide an interactive way to dive deeper into a story. Through photography, audio, and prose, readers engage with complex global issues such as statelessness.

"Because I believe so much in the importance of the stories I work on, I refuse to accept the limitations of traditional publishing these days, which is why we have to explore as many creative and strategic ways for getting the work out there as possible. I think the possibilities to tell robust, multi-dimensional stories through e-books are endless," said Constantine.

"Voices of Haiti" is a multimedia collection of stories, poems and music that immerses the reader in post-earthquake Haiti. With reporting by Lisa Armstrong, poetry by Kwame Dawes, photography by Andre Lambertson and music by Kevin Simmonds, it is a collaborative exploration into what journalism can look like on iBooks Author. The book was named one of the best e-books of the year by Pictures of the Year International Awards (POYi).

Pulitzer Center Executive Director Jon Sawyer said that the Pulitzer Center's e-book initiative is aimed at reaching new audiences, creating new sources of income for journalists, and ensuring sustained engagement with important global issues.

"The goal is to make these e-books the capstone for many of our projects, to give readers an immersive, visually compelling, and narrative-driven experience," said Sawyer. All proceeds are given to the journalists.
