The 2006 election in the Democratic Republic of Congo was supposed to usher in a new period of peace and stability for the beleaguered, exhausted Congolese people. Instead, it made one of the country's most intractable problems worse.

Intense diplomatic efforts are underway to try to find a solution to the latest conflict in eastern Congo. Tens of thousands have been displaced in just the past few days. Reporter Michael Kavanagh spoke with some of the displaced and sent this report.
